In 1862 the country ran out of coins. People paid in stamps.

That's what a stamp is. Money you can mail. A number in the corner and Washington in the oval, same as the dollar. Good for exactly what it says.

Until somebody wants it. Then the number in the corner stops mattering.

Face Value is the five-cent blue, laser annealed on milled titanium. Nothing redrawn. The portrait, the laurels, U.S. POSTAGE across the top, the fives in the corners, the perforated edge milled one tooth at a time. Blue, because blue meant the letter was leaving the country.

Then the lines. Laser annealed across the finished face, through the blue, down to bare titanium. A cancellation means it's been spent. It's the last operation on every piece. Forty pieces. Fourty cancellations. 

Turn it over. The Kraken. ACUSHNET MASS. The date it left.

You've seen the coin. You've seen the note. You've seen the card. This is the one that was already spent.

The file moves to the Vault with every design we've retired.
