Every course has a place where the water starts and the courage stops.
The men who wore this helmet didn't have that place. Fifty-six pounds of brass and copper bolted over their heads, one hose to the surface, and the bottom of a harbor nobody could see into. They did the work by feel. Alone. Cold. Finished before anyone up top knew what it cost. They didn't call themselves divers. They called themselves hardhats.
Hardhat is built in the same three metals the real helmets were. The body is solid milled copper with a scalloped EDC edge that finds your thumb on the walk up. Set into it, a stainless steel field laser-annealed to a deep ocean blue - the color isn't paint or plating, it's the steel itself, heated until it turns - with the waves cut into it. And riding the swell, a brass Mark V diving helmet, engraved and darkened into every recess, so the bolts and ports read from across the green.
Turn it over. Kraken mark, centered. Nothing else. The thing that lives below the waterline doesn't need to announce itself.
That's the whole idea. The kraken is down there. Everyone knows it. Everyone lays up. Hardhat is the golf ball marker for the one who goes in anyway - the one who aims at the pin over the water on 17 because the water was never the point.
Copper darkens. The edge polishes where your thumb rides. In five years this golf ball marker will look like it came off a wreck, because it went everywhere you did.
When the last one goes the file is retired and Hardhat never runs again - it moves to the Vault with every design we've buried.
