MACHIYA - The House Mark · Stainless Steel · Permanent Stock

The roof came off the coin that was never released.

No logo. No name. No number. Just a house, milled from solid stainless steel, sitting behind your ball while the rest of the group tries to work out what it is. The ones who know won't ask.

Why a house.

It's a machiya - the merchant townhouse of old Kyoto. Narrow at the street, deep behind it. The front room was the shop. The back was where the family lived. One roof over the work and the life, because the man who made the thing was the man who sold it and the man who slept above it.

Kyoto tore most of them down. Concrete went up faster and cheaper and nobody argued. The machiya still standing are standing because somebody refused - paid more to keep something old than it would have cost to replace it with something new.

That's the house Kraken is built in. The mill runs twenty feet from the kitchen. Every piece is cut, finished and boxed by the same pair of hands. So the house became the mark, and this golf ball marker is the mark with nothing else on it.

It's milled as an open frame. Window cut clean through, gable cut clean through, so the green shows through it when you set it down. The tool paths are left on the face exactly as the mill drew them. Ten grams. It disappears in a pocket until you need it.

Nearly everything made here runs once and goes to the Vault. The house doesn't. It stays (at least for now), milled in small batches between drops by the same man who makes everything else. When a batch is gone, it's gone until he gets back to the mill.

A factory golf ball marker says you took what was handed to you. This one says which house you belong to.
