The HELM

THE HELM - Stock · Limited Batch

Some golfers spend eighteen holes reacting. The wind takes the ball, the green takes the putt, the round goes wherever it goes. Then there's the other kind. He decides where the round is going before the first tee and spends four hours keeping it there.

The Helm is a ship's wheel, milled from solid copper. Eight spokes, turned handles, an open center you can look straight through. The finish is raw, exactly as it came off the machine. There's no bead blast and no darkening, and the small tool marks are left visible because they're the proof of how it was made.

Copper is a ship's metal. For two hundred years wooden hulls were sheathed in it to survive the water. In 1841 a whaler named Acushnet sailed out of Fairhaven with Herman Melville aboard, and that voyage became Moby-Dick. This wheel was crafted a few miles from that harbor, in a town that carries the ship's name.

Raw copper doesn't stay the way it ships. Carry it and it darkens, the high points stay bright where your thumb works them, and in a year no two will look alike. This golf ball marker starts out the same as every other one in the batch. After a season it looks like nobody else's.

It weighs 10 grams and is an eighth of an inch thick. It lies flat on the green and you won't notice it in your pocket. Mark your ball with it and take the wheel back when you're done.

The Helm is a stock piece, not a drop, and stock here doesn't mean unlimited. Every one is crafted by one man on one machine, in the hours left over after the Den and the Blacklist are cut. This batch is what the mill could spare this week. When it's gone, the next run waits its turn behind every limited drop on the schedule, and that wait can be weeks.

Most golfers mark their ball with whatever came free in the sleeve. This golf ball marker is for the one holding the wheel.
